Merino Wool Blanket Care

HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR MERINO WOOL BLANKETS

Blankets must be hand washed only.

Woollen products don’t need to be washed regularly.

They can recover their initial characteristics by absorbing steam. Simply leave them in the bathroom during a hot shower.

Be aware that if the merino wool blankets are incorrectly washed they can be permanently ruined.

How to hand wash

  1. Fill a suitable container with cold or warm water (30°C/86°F max.).
  2. Add neutral or wool soap.
  3. Submerge the blanket fully and let it soak for 5 - 10 minutes.
  4. Rinse.
  5. Lay the blanket on a flat surface and shape it as desired. Washing might have caused the blanket to lose its original shape, but this can be reversed.
  6. Smooth down the blanket to remove wrinkles and folds.
  7. Let it dry naturally in a ventilated or open area.

What to avoid

  • Avoid soaking the blanket for more than 10 minutes.
  • Avoid rubbing or scrubbing the wool.
  • Avoid excessive squeezing or wringing out.
  • Avoid bleaching.
  • Avoid leaving the item wet without properly placing into the desired shape.
  • Avoid exposing the blanket to direct sunlight or other sources of heat.

How to store

  • Make sure your item is clean and completely dry before storing.
  • Store it in an airtight container without removing all the air which can cause the item to wrinkle.
  • Store it in a dry location.

To protect from moths you can use specific anti-moth products avoiding direct contact with your item. Bay leaves and lavender can be used instead of the usual toxic chemical anti-moth products.

How to iron

  1. Set your iron to ‘wool’ mode.
  2. Place your blanket on a flat surface and make sure it has the desired shape and size.
  3. Sprinkle some water on top or use a steam iron.
  4. Don’t press the iron too much on to the blanket.
  5. After ironing leave the blanket on a flat surface for about 5 minutes before folding.
  6. Don’t add anything to the water (e.g. fabric softeners).

How to remove pilling

Pilling can be removed by hand with small, sharp scissors or using a pill remover.

How to remove a stain

Stains should be treated as soon as possible.

Never apply heat on a stain.

  1. Remove all the solids from the fabric.
  2. Use a clean cloth to absorb the liquid from the stain, press gently starting from the edges and moving to the centre. Don’t rub the stain.
  3. If the stain persists, wet it slightly with warm water and repeat the previous process.

How to fix a snagged thread

Use a tool with a blunt point to gently push the thread back into the blanket. If it is too long you can weave it back again by identifying in which direction the loose thread runs and gently pulling the wool in the same direction to make the thread go back to its original place.
