This year we have decided to go for simple natural festive decorations. A handmade wreath from the local florist. A few fragrant evergreen twigs to serve as a table runner. And candlelight. Simple natural festive table decorations that are quick and easy to plan and just as easy to set up and put away.
The lead up to the holiday period can be full of a sense of rushed urgency towards completing everything on our to-do list. The feeling that we will be able to enjoy the day once everything has been ticked-off can be a deceptive thief of joy. But every preparation we make is a small investment into the day itself. Preparing for something in advance fills that event with meaning precisely as a result of the time and attention we have invested into it. It is the preparation that distinguishes a day from all other days and that ultimately results in making it feel special. So instead of focusing on getting everything done, this year I will try to give the preparation itself the attention it deserves. Savouring each gift I wrap, each part of the meal I prepare and each place I set at the table in the knowledge that it is this care that will give the day its true meaning.
